Frugal Friday- Crockpot Bread

I will admit that I stole/borrowed this recipe from another blogger. You can get to Emily's website by going here. She has a great tutorial on baking this bread with even more pictures and detail versus what I will put up here.

The idea of using the crockpot to bake bread is genius to me. I love the idea of baking our bread, but I lack the knowledge of allowing it to rise properly and I don't want to tie up the oven all day. I like how you let it rise on the warm setting of the crockpot, then switch it over to hot to allow it to cook.

I used Emily's basic recipe. For next time I will likely add a little butter and/or sugar as that may affect the rising time.
These are regular cans from diced tomatoes that I saved when I made chili. Two fit perfectly in my crock pot. Here is my bread rising. It took my crock about 1 hour on warm to have the bread rise sufficiently.

This is the finished product. The cooking time was also longer in my crock versus the recipe.

I love the size and shape of the loaves. They will be great for sandwiches (no crusts for the kids to complain about).
This bread has almost completely disappeared and it finished only an hour ago. My kids gobbled it up! I did manage to save a little.
I am intrigued to the possibilities of making sweet breads this way as well. I will definitely be making this bread again, and hope to feel comfortable enough to start using different flours and combinations. Baking my own bread is after all one of my goals this year!
Do you make your own bread? Do you cook something different in your crockpot? Let us all know by leaving a comment!

Pierce's Highlights for the week

It's a new week and I've got a big problem. I am out of money in my grocery envelope and there is one more week before I get more. Yikes. I have enough in my checkbook 'buffer' that I always keep, but that is not the point.

January is the first month that we were going to try and lower our monthly grocery budget. apparently this is not going to be as easy as I thought. Hubby and I talked about it, and we are going back to the original amount for awhile. I guess we'll try that again in a couple months.

But now, it's on to the deals. As always check out the entire flyer either in the stores or online. Here are the deals according to me...

Page one
---------
Bananas $0.38/lb
Quaker Savings: theses are all good prices and there are the following coupons available:
  • ad coupon $3/5 products
  • $1/2 Aunt Jemima syrup
  • $1/2 for chewy granola bars
  • $1 IP for Old fashion oats

Page two

Claussen pickles $2.50, use $1 IP

Johnsonville brats $2.50, $1/2 MQ

Grands Biscuits $1.25, use $1/2 IP

Yoplait gogurt $2, use $1/2 IP

Page three

Creamette pasta $1 (good price if at least 16 oz)

Chinet plates $2.50, use $2 MQ (expires 1/31 I believe)

Page four

Cauliflower $0.98/lb

Taco Bell salsa $1.66, use $1 MQ

Don't forget they also have a $0.98/lb special going on with pork this week as well. check it out!

Piggly Wiggly Internet coupons

Thanks to Cindy for the full scoop....

Piggly Wiggly in Pardeeville (and I am assuming Poynette as well) are now accepting internet coupons up to $2 value.

Yippee! Wanted to pass the word along. I'm still working on getting Pierce's to loosen up their policy a little. I got an email back but I am responding to them again.

A couple Walgreens orders

I made my weekly Walgreens run today. While there are many sales going on this week, I didn't need much. I tried to make the most of my $10 RR that I earned last week. Here's what I came up with.
Transaction #1: (bottom picture)
  • 2 Mini Wheats 2/$5, used $1.50/2 IP and got $1 RR
  • 1 paper plates $0.99 with ad coupon
  • 1 Organix hair conditioner $6.99. It has a full price rebate on it so it will be free after rebate

My total after coupon above and the $10 RR from last week was $1.92 with a coupon/ad savings of $15.30. In addition I got a $1 RR for next time and will get a $6.99 rebate on the conditioner.

Transaction #2: (top picture)

  • 2 Mini Wheats 2/$5, used $1.50/2 IP and got $1 RR
  • 4 Frito Lay salsa
  • 4 tostito chips, used $1 MQ when you buy salsa and chips.

My total for this transaction was $19.50 after coupons. The coupon and ad savings was $16.42 and I received a $10 RR from the chips/salsa and $1 RR from the cereal.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the haul, now excuse me while I fill out my rebate and get it in the mail ASAP!

A use for your Swagbucks

Hopefully by now you are using Swagbucks to earn point for all your internet searches. If not, click on the photo and it will take you to the site to sign up.

Another place to sign up right now is Alice.com. This website is a place to purchase things we all need in our homes; dish soap, toothpaste, toilet paper and so much more. Shipping is always free, prices are fair and they feature clipless coupons as well for further savings. Click here to sign up at Alice.com.

Now I have a great way for you to combine both of these things. If you have 20 swagbucks in your account this is a great deal.

Under your swagbucks account, go to the 'swag store' and choose the gift card tab. You will find a Alice.com $5 gift card available for 20 swagbucks. Redeem and wait for the ecode, then go to Alice.com to place your order.

I did this deal a few weeks ago and got all of the following for $0.83 (after the giftcard)

  • Bounty basic paper towel
  • Bounty napkins
  • Angel soft toilet paper 9 pack

You usually need to purchase 6 items on alice except for your first order. I think that is a pretty good haul for $.83!

If I find any other good deals for you on swagbucks or alice, I will keep you posted.

My second Walgreens run of last week

I had to return to Walgreens in order to do the Pepsi deal--which is awesome!

2 Planters nuts $1.99 on sale, used $1/2 MQ plus $1 Wags Q on each --- $0.49 each

4 salsa, 4 soda 2 liters, 2 bags chips ~ total $20. used $1/4 Pepsi, $1 off chips + salsa.

I also used my 7 Register Rewards to get my total down to $12.26 and I received a $10 Register Reward for my next purchase. My ad and coupon savings in this trip was $22.90.

The sale is going on this week as well, and I plan to get some more chips and salsa since we go through a lot of it! Yummy.

Rolling Pig Deal

There is a smokin' hot deal at Piggly Wiggly that is going until Tuesday.

Betty Crocker fruit snacks are on sale for 4/$5. When you use the $1/2 coupons (from pillsbury.com and bettycrocker.com) you end up getting them 4/$3.

To sweeten the deal even better, when you buy 8 boxes, you get a catalina (coupon for $$ to use on your next order) for $3.50. And the deal is rolling...which means you can use the catalina to buy 8 more boxes. I was able to get 8 boxes of fruit snacks for $2.50 total after figuring in the catalina and coupons.

Another rolling catalina deal I found......buy 3 boxes of General Mills cereal that are on sale for 3/$6.98. (there are coupons for GM cereals online $1). When you buy 3 boxes you also get a catalina $3.75 off of a future milk purchase. I bought milk that was $1.99 and got to keep the excess of the value towards my other groceries.

All told, I got all of the above groceries for $12.62!! (coupon and ad savings was $35.89) go me!

Frugal Friday- swiffer

Over the Christmas Holiday we had some friends and family over at the house. I was cleaning up the house at the last minute and realized I had run out of the swiffer wet pads for mopping up the floor. I have wood laminate floors and have always used the wet swiffer and loved it.

But the refills are expensive. I always put off buying more until there is a good sale, but I can never find a really good price on it. I guess I had not remembered to buy more when I used up the last ones.

Desperate to get the floors cleaned I problem solved. Because really, there is no way I'm a "clean it on your hands and knees" kind of girl. Sorry, not my generation.

Look what I came up with....

I found that the bathroom washcloths are just the right width for the swiffer!

So line it up......

And push the cloth into the little tabs! It is PERFECT!
I seriously feel pretty smart about this one.
I found a bottle of "laminate floor cleaner" in the cupboard (must have bought it when I did the floors), so I sprayed and then pushed the swiffer over it.
The floors have never looked better!
When my bottle of cleaner is gone, I plan to make my own. I found a website that recommends using water and a little vinegar to clean the floors. So I will definitely mix my own bottle next time.
I probably didn't invent this idea, but I feel pretty good about it.
What are your frugal inventions? Please share!

Stick up for what you want!

I have frustrated for the ages with the internet coupon policy currently in place at Pierce's. I complained about it but finally decided to take action.

I emailed the headquarters/main office and stated my frustration and even gave ways that internet coupons can be traced and explained that there are legitimate sites where you can print coupons with a higher than $1 value. I thought I'd share the email I received today....

"I want to thank you for the response that you sent in concerning internet coupons. We have set up our current process and system due to the amount of fraudulent coupons that we were receiving via the net. I am in the process of re-evaluating our coupon policy. This is happening because of your response. Again, I appreciate your comments and will be back in contact with you in the near future to communicate the outcome. '

I am looking forward to seeing/hearing if there will be any improvement in the policy. I expressed to them my frustration about having to go to another store in order to use those higher value. They are losing my business when I would rather keep it at their store. I like to think they value their customers and this is what is leading to the review.

I will keep you posted as well!

In case you didn't notice, there is a big sale on Pepsi products, buy $20, get a $10 RR. It makes for a great deal on soda and chips ~ if that's your thing. I know I will be making another trip this week.

This sounds familiar.....

Wow, it seems like I have said this a lot this year. But....sorry for the lack of posts over the past few days.

Last weekend all 3 of my kids decided to have this "stomach flu" thing that has been going around. Mind you, they took turns with it the little darlings.

Things got back to normal until Thursday when I got it. Finally feeling better by Saturday and woke up this morning to the sounds of my hubby being sick in the bathroom. What a sound to wake to!

Anywho, I hope we are getting back on track so I can get back to the website. I did go grocery shopping, but I avoided the 1 day meat sale at Pierce's. I just couldn't face it on Friday. I heard it was a madhouse in there!

If you get this stomach thing, rest assured it is over within 12 hours, except for the muscle aches from all the vomiting.....those will stick with you for a couple days.

Be well.

Piggly Wiggly Ad

Hey folks. I just noticed in the Poynette/Pardeeville Pig ad on the bottom of page 4 it says "we take internet coupons up to $2 value".

If anyone is around that area and could check it out, let me know. My last known info was that they did not take internet coupons. This could be big!

Email me with the info so I can keep everyone updated. Thanks.

Free Lightbulbs

Here's a great freebie reminder (thanks Vicki). Single bulbs are on sale at Ace hardware this week for $1. Go to coupons.com and print a coupon for $1 off. That means the bulbs are free!

A great time to stock up on some bulbs this week!!

Ace Hardware in Portage will take internet coupons as well!

Walgreen's goodies

Made my weekly run to Walgreens yesterday and thought I'd share what I got!
  • 2 Hellmann's mayo $2.99 sale, used $0.75 MQ
  • 1 Colgate toothpaste $2.99, used $1 MQ and got $2 RR- net FREE
  • 3 Kotex tampons 3/$9, used $1/2 MQ and got $4 RR- net 3 box for $4
  • 2 Trash bags $2.99, just an awesome price in my book
  • 2 Lysol toilet cleaner buy one at $2.79, get one free. used $1/2 MQ to get both for $1.79

My out of pocket was $23.24, with a coupon/ad savings of $15.66. Plus I still have $6 RR that I earned. The total is a little higher than I would like, but I am happy with the deals. I could have done 2 transactions in order to lower my out of pocket, but I didn't.

The Kotex are a really good deal. What I should have done was buy 4 boxes for $12 and used 2 $1/2 MQ to have a total of $10 out of pocket. Then you will receive 4 RR and when all is said and done you would have 4 boxes for $5....Only $1.25 per box. I may have to go back and do this deal myself!

2010 Goals

Yes, I know that 2010 started nearly 2 weeks ago. I have been meaning to share some of my goals with you, better late than never! In no specific order here they are.

Financial Goals
  1. Pay off the van by the end of March. This will keep us on track with our total debt reduction. This will be met without difficulty I hope.
  2. Reduce our monthly grocery bill by $40. That means we will be spending only $60 per week instead of the previous $70.
  3. Payoff an additional 30% of our debt so it is reduced by 60% total. Why not pay off all of it you may ask. In our current situation I would say that it would definitely be possible. However, we are contemplating a reduction in hubby's hours at work in order to have him at home more. This would also mean less commuting as well. A final decision has not been made, but I want to leave room for the possibility in our budget for now.
  4. Sell some old stuff on Craig's list. I have a list started for many things we no longer need that others may find valuable. Just need to get it done!

Household Goals

  1. Replace the roof on the house. This is 2 years past due and we can not afford to put it off any longer.
  2. Finish living room trim. The remodel was nearly 4 years ago and this still has not been finished. It is time.
  3. Limit all purchases of new items. I would like to really ponder the need of all purchases and buy used or from Goodwill/garage sales as much as possible.
  4. Try baking our bread. I have a recipe to try....I'll let you know if it is a success.
  5. Purchase grass fed beef in bulk for the freezer. Just need to clean out the freezer more,
  6. Expand the garden. We have many mistakes to learn from. Given that last year was our first year being serious about it, we now know some ways to improve it. Looking forward to plotting it out!

I think that about covers it. Some of them may be lofty goals, but I found after last year that by having my goals out and posted I am able to stay focused on the long term plan!

I am behind in my postings....

Fret not my friends. I have a couple posts that I am behind on, but life is throwing me a curve ball today.

I have a child that has been up vomiting all night and it hasn't stopped yet. So, I will try to get caught up later this weekend.

I apologize for the lack of info on the site, but bear with me.

Thanks.

Kmart rewards

I got to realize a benefit of the Kmart Rewards card. I had a couple things to pick up there and imagine my surprise when after my card was scanned I was told I had $0.40 in rewards to apply towards my total!

Keep in mind the program has only been going for a couple months and I already earned a reward!

Happy happy joy joy!

Walgreen's deals of the week

I didn't go to Walgreen's last week, so I was ready for this week. I also had extra money in my Walgreens envelope for spending!!

Ok, I realized I didn't separate my orders in the pictures above. I did two transactions total that contain items from both pictures.
My first transaction was this:
  • 4 Nabisco cookies $0.99 each, used (2) $1/2 MQ
  • 3 Flintstones vitamins $6.99 each, used $1/2 MQ and earned $6 RR when you buy 3

My total was $21.08 out of pocket (a little high I admit, but I have been out of vitamins for awhile and with the flu season in full swing I need my kiddos to have them. After factoring in the coupons and rewards they are about $4 each bottle- a decent price). My coupon and ad savings was $7.53. Don't forget I also received a $6 RR which I used in my second transaction!

My second transaction contained the following:
  • 1 Splenda $2.99, used $1 MQ
  • 1 Vanity Fair bowls $1.50, used $1 MQ
  • 2 Nabisco cookies $0.99, used $1/2 MQ
  • 2 Nabisco crackers $0.99 each, used $1/2 MQ, also earned a $2 RR!
  • 2 Quaker granola bars $2 each
  • 2 All laundry soap $3.29, used $2 MQ

I used the $6 RR from the first transaction to pay here. My out of pocket on this transaction was $5.47 with a coupon/ad savings of $23.23. I also got a $2 RR for a future purchase.

In all, I am happy with my visit today. I came home with tons of stuff and don't feel like I had to spend a whole lot!

Quick easy meals for work or on the run. Enjoy!

January meal plan and challenge

Soooo, bloggers from all around the Internet are using January for an "Eat from the Pantry Challenge". This means trying to use this month to limit purchases of new food and using up what you have stockpiled in the freezer and pantry. You can save money by limiting how you buy and meal plan from what you already have on hand.
I haven't done an eat from the pantry challenge before, but I am doing one now! Just don't tell my husband because he might feel 'limited' even though he honestly won't notice a difference since I do the shopping and cooking. Our meals will look the same to him.
This is important to me for two reasons:
  1. My freezer is FULL. I plan on buying bulk grass fed beef soon and I need to make room!
  2. I want to decrease my weekly amount spent on groceries, and this will give me some leeway in the budget.

Right now we budget $70 per week in groceries for our family of five. This has been a very comfortable limit for us for the past year, but I'd like to challenge ourselves a little more in this department. That will give us more money to pay the bills!

I did an inventory of our freezers with the intent of posting it to share. However, I was totally embarrassed to discover we could feed a small country for a year easily. I made our monthly meal plan and realized we will only need to buy bread, milk and salad fixings for the entire month!

I am not going to make many rules for myself during this challenge as I don't want to miss out on any stockpiling opportunities that may arise. I do plan to decrease the weekly budget though as I mentioned before.

That said, here is the January meal plan (by date). Lunch is mentioned on weekends/holiday only. To throw a wrench in my plan, the oven died yesterday. Hope a repairman can fix it next week......

  1. Lunch: grilled cheese or soup, fruit. Supper: spaghetti
  2. Lunch: turkey, veggie and chips. Supper: hot dogs, mac 'n cheese
  3. Lunch: sandwiches. Supper: beef stir fry, rice, peas
  4. chicken breasts, green beans, ?rice
  5. pork ribs, salad, corn, fries
  6. beef stew with mixed veggies
  7. pizza
  8. breakfast for dinner: waffles, ?sausage braid or eggs
  9. lunch: sandwiches. Supper: spaghetti
  10. Lunch: pigs in a blanket, fruit smoothie. Supper: chili
  11. chicken legs, mashed potatoes, beans
  12. pork chops, stuffing, salad, veggies
  13. hamburgers, baked beans, salad
  14. pizza
  15. turkey soup from mix, bread, veggie
  16. Lunch: taco salads. Supper: sandwiches, fruit smoothies
  17. Lunch: lasagna with garlic grands. Supper: sandwiches
  18. chicken thighs, rice, veggie
  19. tuna/cheese melts, veggies
  20. grilled fish, peas and rice
  21. pizza
  22. tator tot casserole, broccoli
  23. Lunch: turkey tetrazinni, Supper: sandwiches, fruit smoothies
  24. Lunch: manwich, chips. Supper: whatever is in the fridge
  25. chicken breast, rice, green bean casserole
  26. pork steaks, salad, fries
  27. homemade sub sandwiches, chips, veggie
  28. pizza
  29. fish sticks, fries, veggie
  30. lunch: taco salad. Supper: sandwiches, fruit smoothies
  31. Lunch: cheeseburgers, baked beans. Supper: spaghetti-Os

Ok, just so you are up to speed.....I have tons of frozen veggies and fruit in the freezer. So if I didn't list it exactly it is because I will just grab whatever I see that day. I may also have something fresh to use if it is on sale that week. Another given is that we may end up eating out 1-2 times during the month. If that is the case, the meal gets bumped.

Well, there you have it. My dirty little stockpile secret is out and I will try to pare down the stash this month. I will also re-post this meal list on Monday's for everyone that uses Monday for their meal planning!

Would you like to join in with the "Eat from the pantry challenge"? If so let me know. We can all share together!
